The back story

About Chinatown: Grant Avenue, Waverly Place and the alleys

Chinatown climbs from the Dragon Gate up Grant Avenue and Stockton Street, with temples, shops, bakeries and historic lanes between Union Square and North Beach.

The Dragon Gate

The Dragon Gate at Grant Avenue and Bush Street is the traditional entrance, a few minutes’ walk from Union Square.

Grant Avenue and Stockton Street

Grant Avenue is lined with lanterns and shops; one block west, Stockton Street is where the neighbourhood does its everyday shopping.

Walk through the Dragon Gate and the city changes in a single step.

The lanes

Turn off into Waverly Place, home of Mister Jiu’s, and the narrow alleys between Grant and Stockton for the quieter, older side of Chinatown.

Our advice: walk uphill from the Dragon Gate to Broadway, then carry on straight into North Beach.
