The back story

About The Mission: murals, Mission Dolores and Valencia Street

The Mission is one of the city’s sunniest and liveliest neighbourhoods: Mission Dolores, the murals of its alleys, Dolores Park, Valencia Street’s cafés and some of its best restaurants.

Mission Dolores and the park

Mission Dolores on 16th Street is the city’s founding mission, and Dolores Park slopes up a few blocks south with views across to downtown.

The murals

The Mission’s walls are covered in murals, especially in Clarion Alley and around 24th Street, where Precita Eyes Muralists runs its visitor centre and mural walks.

The Mission is often sunny when the rest of the city is in fog.

Valencia Street

Valencia Street is lined with cafés, shops and bars, from Ritual and Paxton Gate to The Chapel, with Tartine on Guerrero and Lazy Bear and Foreign Cinema nearby.

Our advice: start with coffee and pastries, picnic in Dolores Park, then walk the murals in the afternoon light.
